The sherbet gala, which gained popularity in the 1980s as the "Afghan Mona Lisa" from National Geographic magazine, took refuge in Italy.

A statement from the Italian government stated that "Afghan citizens have arrived at the sherbet gallery," but did not give a date for their arrival.

Italian officials said they had responded to requests from social organizations working in Afghanistan to help Sherbat-e-Gula leave the Taliban-held country.

"Arrangements for the sherbet throat trip to Italy are part of a larger evacuation program for Afghan citizens," the statement said.

Sherbet-e-Gula is arguably Afghanistan's most popular immigrant, photographed by American photographer Steve McCurry at an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan in the 1980s.
