A grenade attack on a truck in the Baldia area of ​​Karachi on Saturday night killed 10 people, including six women and four children.


A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Dawn News that it was an act of terrorism.

The senior officer revealed that experts had confirmed that it was a grenade attack, the bomb disposal squad had received a grenade lever and a Russian-made RG-1 grenade had been used in the attack.

"We are examining the incident from all angles to determine whether the people involved in the blast belonged to any sectarian or extremist group, while the anti-terrorism department and local police are conducting a joint investigation," he said.

Talking to media after inspecting the site, Raja Omar Khattab, a senior officer of the Anti-Terrorism Department, said that the preliminary investigation revealed that it was a grenade attack and the grenade exploded before it fell into the truck. Hour was riding a motorcycle.

Kemari SSP Fida Hussain Januri while talking to media said that the incident took place due to a cylinder explosion in a small truck.
He said that the truck driver had put a family including women and children in the truck from Parishan Chowk in the municipality.

Earlier, DIG South, Javed Akbar Riaz, while talking to Dawn, said that according to initial information, there were 20 to 25 people in the truck in which the blast took place.

He said the passengers were attending a wedding when the truck exploded and all those injured were taken to a civil hospital.

The police officer said that according to the preliminary investigation, the incident was not the result of terrorism or sectarianism and a bomb disposal squad has been called in to find out the nature of the blast.

Earlier, a spokesperson of Edhi Foundation had said that the blast took place in a Shahzor truck at PSO petrol pump near Mowach Goth and the bodies of seven people killed in the accident have been shifted to Dr Rath Fa Civil Hospital.

On the other hand, an official of the Hidden Rescue Service said that they also shifted three more bodies from the accident site to the hospital, as a result of which the death toll has risen to 10 while the number of injured in the incident is more than 10.

Police and other law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene after the incident and cordoned off the area.

Administrator Karachi Murtaza Wahab took notice of the incident and contacted SSP Kemari and sought details of the incident.

He said that investigators were examining the incident from different angles and expressed regret over the loss of life in the incident.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also took notice of the cylinder blast and urged the police and district administration to shift the injured to a nearby hospital and take full care of the victims.

He demanded a report from the Transport Minister about the vehicle and said that it should be ascertained whether the vehicle belonged to Sindh province or another province.

It may be recalled that on August 5 last year, a grenade attack was carried out on the Kashmir rally of Jamaat-e-Islami in Karachi on the day of exploitation in which at least 33 people were injured.
