KARACHI: Chief Justice of Sindh High Court Ahmed Ali Sheikh has refused to attend the swearing-in ceremony in Islamabad on Tuesday after being appointed as an ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court.

According to the Dawn newspaper, on the suggestion of Prime Minister Imran Khan, President Arif Alvi had earlier appointed the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court as an ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court for a period of one year.

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan last week decided by a majority of four out of five to invite Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh to become an ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court for a period of one year, provided he agrees.

The Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, in an earlier letter to the Judicial Commission, dispelled the impression that he had never agreed to attend the sittings of the Supreme Court as an ad hoc judge.

Informed sources told Dawn that Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh once again apologized for sitting on the benches of the Supreme Court and wrote a separate letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed and President Arif Alvi a few hours after the notification of appointment was issued.

The Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court in his letter, a copy of which is available with Dawn, wrote that the Registrar of the High Court had brought to his notice that under a notification issued by the President, I was appointed as an ad hoc judge. To sit on the benches of the esteemed Supreme Court for a period of one year.

He said the notification was issued despite the fact that he had "repeatedly and repeatedly refused to attend Supreme Court sittings as an ad hoc judge".

The Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court said, "For this reason, I want to say that the notification was issued without any legal authority and has no legal status."
